This page is dedicated to essays for my history of Fashion and design class.

" Women's Clothing during Hannah Penn's Time" essay The article I read was “Women's Clothing during Hannah Penn's Time” which is a description of the clothing worn in Pennsbury Manor around the 17th centaury. They appeared to have a collection of different styles of women’s clothing, ranging from wealthy women’s clothing to middle and lower class.
They start off describing the undergarments of or as they call it linen chemise as constricting the woman until sheet appeared in her “ideal” form with round hips and the shoulders back. They continued with a description of the lower calls dress which they described as a garment with a three-quarter length garment that concealed the upper body and wide, elbow long-sleeved and pleats. It also had a stuffer around the neck and a hood to cover her hair.
The middle class dress was described as having a petticoat as having more expensive fabric and decorations in a horizontal pattern. While the upper class dresses were made from silks, wools, linens, or blends that were dyed to make bright colors. The main outward difference was the decorative mantua on the chest which varied depending on the family.
They didn’t go into to much more detail and their outfits and did not give any extravagant descriptions. They had pretty formal attitude in the descriptions so I can assume that they did not over exemplify the dress.
